The pandemic-induced lockdown in 2020 forced schools to close around the country. The lockdown interrupted face-to-face instruction for all K-12 and collegiate students, leading to many educational needs not being met due to gaps in technology access. We estimate that school closures and online learning have impacted student learning. Existing research shows that summer vacation and out-of-school-time due to factors such as absenteeism have an impact on learning. This information gives us a rough sense of how online education and lack of technology access might have affected students’ academic achievement. Although learning loss data due to COVID-19 is slow to emerge, our leading goal is to begin addressing learning loss by working with students that have been affected by the pandemic. In addition, our goal is to involve parents by supporting them in gaining skills that will allow them to better support their students.
